News of the Week

Happy Birthday, Dear Twitter!

The social networking site, Twitter is five years old today. It has grown from having a few thousand users to more than 175 million members around the world.

Twitter is a system for putting out messages that are no more than 140 characters long, so, the length of a text message, really. And you put your message out there, and gradually you hope that more and more people follow you. It's a system slightly like Facebook, where you've got friends, but much more public. And on Twitter you have followers, and you follow people.

The founder of Twitter Jack Dorsey explained that, "The name Twitter came from Noah Glass & the Oxford English: "a short inconsequential burst of information, chirps from birds."

To date billions of those chirps have been tweeted around the globe. Recent figures released showed that more than 140 million tweets are sent daily - about one billion a week.
Nowadays the celebraties like Barack Obama (http://twitter.com/BarackObama), British Prime Minister David Cameron (http://twitter.com/number10gov), Lady Gaga (http://twitter.com/Ladygaga), Demi Moore (twitter.com/mrskutcher), Dmitry Medvedev (http://twitter.com/KremlinRussia) and many others write about their day-to-day business and have millions of followers.
